There is no special background needed to become an Advocate. Training is provided. After completing an application and interviewing with director, required reference and background checks are completed. After that, individuals will receive a letter of acceptance and are ready for training.
New for 2012 is CASA 101, a flex-learning curriculum developed by the National CASA Association and tailored by Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children for Ulster County and New York State. This new training, a total of 30 to 35 hours in length, combines 15 hours of interactive classroom instruction with an equivalent amount of facilitated online work.

Spring: Begins Saturday, May 19th
Saturday, 5/19, 9am to 1pm
Wednesdays, 5/23, 5/30, 6/6 and 6/13, 5:30 to 8:30pm

Fall: Begins Saturday, October 6th
Saturday, 10/6, 9am to 1pm
Wednesdays, 10/10, 10/17 and 10/24, 5:30 to 8:30pm
Monday, 10/29, 5:30 to 8:30pm

Training sessions are held at CASA's office at 51 Maiden Lane in uptown Kingston. Courtroom observation and Swearing In are held at Ulster County Family Court, 16 Lucas Avenue in Kingston. Refreshments are provided. There is no charge for training, but access to a computer with internet access is essential.
