You may think it's a big
city problem, but its right here in our backyard.
Last Year in Ulster County, more than 600 children were abused or neglected. Over 300 children were thrust into the court
because they were abused, neglected or abandoned by those they loved and
trusted the most.
Many of these children find themselves in foster care or temporary situations,
often bouncing from home to home. Our family court judges must make
critical decisions about these vulnerable children's lives, often with a
disturbing shortage of facts.
Shelter From the Storm.
At Court Appointed Special Advocates of
Ulster County, we put these children first. Staffed almost entirely by
non-paid volunteers, CASA makes a real difference in the lives of children at
risk. The Three Keys. CASA Advocate Volunteers have three key responsibilities. Focusing on the child's best
interests, each volunteer is a fact finder for the judge, thoroughly researching the
background of their case. They speak on behalf of the child in the courtroom and they are a watchdog for the child for as long as they are in foster care or otherwise under court supervision.
Our volunteers are ordinary people who do extraordinary
things for our community's most vulnerable children. A Simple Goal. At CASA of Ulster County,
our goal is to ensure that children find safe, stable, permanent homes
instead of getting lost in the limbo of foster care and bureaucracy.
